Sedation Dentistry

Dental anxiety and worry are common and frequently prevent patients from receiving the urgent care they require. They put the health of their mouth and body in further danger by frequently skipping dental examinations or visits to address concerns. When you become a member of our dental family at Main Street Dental, there is no need to stress about needing dental care. Our dental staff will ensure you are at ease and comfortable during your appointments. We provide sedation dentistry in North Baltimore, OH, for people who require additional assistance feeling relaxed.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a branch of dentistry that uses sedatives to help patients relax during dental procedures. There are different types of sedation, ranging from light sedation, which causes drowsiness, to general anesthesia, which renders patients unconscious. The type of sedation we use will depend on the procedure we perform and your level of anxiety. We can use sedation dentistry for many dental procedures, from routine cleaning and fillings to more complex procedures such as tooth extractions.

For many people, sedation dentistry provides a much-needed sense of calm during what can be a stressful experience. Additionally, sedation can help to reduce pain and discomfort during dental procedures. As a result, sedation dentistry has become an increasingly popular option for patients who experience anxiety or fear when faced with dental appointments.

What are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

You can radically transform your life and dental experiences if you choose one of our sedation dentistry solutions. With any of our sedation options, we can assist in providing you with the following benefits:

Reduce Anxiety: Sedation can help reduce anxiety and fear. Many people feel anxious or scared when they think about going to the dentist. However, sedation can help to ease these feelings, allowing patients to receive the dental care they need without feeling anxious or stressed.

Reduce Pain: Sedation can help reduce pain. Some dental procedures can be painful, but sedation can help to minimize the discomfort. This is especially beneficial for patients with a low pain threshold or particularly sensitive to pain.

Reduce Gag Reflex: Sedation can help reduce gagging. Gagging is a common reflex that can make it difficult for some patients to receive dental care. However, sedation can help to suppress the gag reflex, making it easier for patients to tolerate dental procedures.

Reduce Complications: Sedation can help reduce the risk of complications. In some cases, sedation can help to reduce the risk of complications associated with specific dental procedures. For example, sedation may be used for patients with a history of fainting or suffering from heart conditions.

Improve Outcomes: Sedation can improve treatment outcomes. When appropriately used, sedation can help improve treatment outcomes by allowing dentists to work more efficiently and effectively. Additionally, sedation may help patients comply more effectively with post-treatment instructions and care regimens.

Our Sedation Services

We promise that all sedation dentistry options will be carefully monitored and managed when you visit Main Street Dental. A knowledgeable and experienced staff member will be on hand to assure your or your child’s safety, whether your treatment is better suited to nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation. Our sedation options include:

“Laughing Gas”

For people with mild to moderate dental anxiety or other unique needs, “laughing gas” is a popular and safe sedation method. You will be conscious of your surroundings while using laughing gas, and your anxiety will vanish into a comfortable state of relaxation.

A mask covering the mouth and nose is used to administer the gas. Laughing gas has far milder sedative effects than other procedures, making it an excellent choice if you’d rather avoid being heavily sedated. After the procedure, we stop the laughing gas, and oxygen is administered for 5 to 10 minutes to help flush out any leftover gas. The effects disappear relatively quickly.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is a solution for many patients who want to feel extremely comfortable throughout their dental treatment. An oral sedative that Dr. Michael O’Neill or Dr. Emily Spetka will prescribe before your session is used for oral conscious sedation. You will take one tablet before bed the night before your dental appointment and another pill an hour before it. While we complete your dental work, you will be awake but quite relaxed and comfortable. Oral sedation patients will require a little longer to recover. Following the sedation, you can experience some light drowsiness. You should arrange a ride home following your procedure in advance.
